Activities

Involving Parents

The eating patterns of children are difficult to change without the involvement of parents. Involving parents in the activities of a day care or classroom can be difficult. However, it is essential to have lasting effects towards improving the health of our children. The following are some suggestions to involve parents in nutrition activities.

  1. Send home a copy of the food guide when it is being discussed or introduced in your program.

  2. Develop a “Nutrition News” letter and include healthy recipes from the program and parents.

  3. Get children involved in the development of a story about the four food groups to be sent home. Have students use one page for each food group, describing their favorites foods, and foods that they have not tried but would like to try. You could use magazines or have children draw their own pictures.

  4. Prepare a list of healthy snacks with input from the children. Compile a list of the children’s favorite snacks from the four foods groups.

  5. Have parents participate in sharing traditional recipes and visiting the program to help prepare their families’ favorites for all the children.
